Liaison Report: The Linux Foundation
The Free Standards Group is a category A liaison organization to SC 22, and is a PAS submitter to JTC 1. In January 2007, the boards of the FSG and the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) voted to merge the two organizations. The membership of both organizations was pooled, an the merger was approved in February.
From JTC 1's perspective, this merger results simply in a name change. The new organization is called "The Linux Foundation", and the executive staff is largely that of the Free Standards Group. In future, JTC 1 and its sub-organizations should refer to The Linux Foundation instead of the Free Standards Group. The secretariats of both JTC 1 and SC 22 have agreed that no other action is required.
The Linux Standard Base (LSB, IS 23360) is currently preparing TC 1 (which may reach ITTF before they publish the base standard!). TC 1 will probably reach ISO balloting later this year.
